Mason had warned me that the PM’s communications were never private. He wasn’t sure if the fae spied on him or the humans, or even someone in his own party, but he’d warned me never to tell him sensitive information until he was sure he had a secure line.

I called him anyway, as soon as I had a signal. He picked up on the first ring.

“Where are you?” I tried to keep the panic from my voice, but he wasn’t fooled.

“What’s the matter? Is everything all right?”

“Just tell me where you are.”

Even though the call was audio only, I imagined him running his hand through his hair.

“I’m still at the office.”

“Good. I’m almost home. I’ll be there in two hours, tops. It’s date night, remember?”

“I remember.” His tone told me I wasn’t fooling him. He knew something was up. I hung up before he could question me further. He’d stress about the call until I got there, but that couldn’t be helped.

Gallivant and I arrived home at a full gallop. Dekar came running at the sound of hooves. I dismounted and tossed him the reins.

“Can you untack him? I’ve got an emergency in the city.”

Dekar nodded. “No problem.”

I’d been trained to always take care of my own mount. It didn’t sit well with me to give Gallivant over to Dekar. But I had no choice now.

Inside, I found Gita snoozing in the chair by the big window. The house was quiet. That meant Holly was down for her afternoon nap. Damn. I’d wanted five minutes with her before I took off again.

I shook Gita gently. She snorted and clacked her teeth together before taking in my worried face.

“Someone is dead?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“That’s good.” She settled back in her chair.

“I have an emergency in town. I have to leave now.”

Mason and I had planned a date night in the city and Gita had already agreed to babysit, but I was leaving hours early.

“S’okay.” Her eyes were already closing. I bit my lip. Was I asking too much from the old banshee?

Dutch came in from the kitchen.

“I’ll be home tonight too.”

That made me feel better. I didn’t know how superheroes saved the world everyday without a full crew at home.

I ran to my room and packed a bag. There would be no time for fancy dresses and cocktails tonight. I packed warm clothes for traveling the Inbetween at night and weapons.

A quick goodbye to Raven and I was out the door, only to stumble over Jacoby.

He didn’t look happy.

“Vacation’s no funs.”

I walked right past him and he followed me to the van, watching while I tossed my bag in the back.

“I thought you were helping Arriz, you know, trying out woodworking as a new hobby.”

“Hobby’s no funs either,” he grouched.

I ground my teeth. I didn’t have time for this.

“There are lots of other hobbies.” I tried to sound cheerful. “Ask Suzt if she can teach you to bake.” If I believed in such things, I’d be going to hell for foisting off the dervish.
